Politician DescriptionFrom 1982 to 1983, Bagbin worked as an assistant admin officer at the Ghana Statistical Service. He later moved to the State Hotel Corp where he worked as an assistant personal officer for 1983 to 1986.
Educational BackgroundAlban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and English from the University of Ghana graduating in 1980. He then enrolled at the Ghana School of Law, Makola for his law studies. In 1982, he was called to the Ghana Bar.
Life in PoliticsBagbin is a member of the National Democratic Congress. He became the Member of Parliament for Nadowli West Constituency after the 1992 general elections in Ghana. He has since won all subsequent parliamentary elections for the constituency making him one of the longest-serving MPs in Ghana. Prior to the 2008 elections, Bagbin announced his intentions to run for the presidency on the ticket of the NDC. However, he later dropped his ambition and did not contest for the NDC presidential primaries. In 2009, when NDC came into office, Bagbin became the Majority Leader of Parliament. In January 2010, President Mills appointed him as Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing. When President Mahama assumed office in January 2013, Bagbin replaced Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor as the Majority Leader of Parliament. He is currently the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament. During the 2018 presidential primaries of the NDC, Bagbin contested to become the flagbearer of the party for the 2020 election but lost to former President John Mahama.
